The newest Russian icebreaker “ Arktika” is the lead ship of a new class and was commissioned in October 2020 in Murmansk. Its main task is to keep the Northern Sea route open and to conduct expeditions to the North Pole region.

 

The “Arktika” is the largest icebreaker of the world with a length of 173,3 m and a beam of 34 m. It is driven by 3 shafts of 20 MW each, the power comes from 2 nuclear reactors of 175 MWt each.
